The Most Beautiful Thing
What is the most beautiful thing? What is it that most draws your attention, your appreciation, your praise to a thing of beauty? Do you share this “most beautiful” sense with others, or is it unique to you?
Beauty starts with the senses. It looks great. It smells wonderful. It is most pleasing to the touch. It sounds remarkable. It tastes delicious. In this rush of sensory input, your mind then defines beauty to your consciousness and emotions. The mind, on its own, can define and recognize beauty in the laws of nature, mathematics, virtue and righteousness. But where does this definition, your definition, come from? Do you share this definition with others? Is there a common earthly definition of “the most beautiful thing”? And, if so, why? I say there is. And it is a beautiful woman.
How remarkably common is it for a man’s attention and appreciation to be drawn to a most beautiful woman. In company, he may say, “Wow! Look at that!” In silence he may simply relish and enjoy the moment and feel a draw toward the woman. This common attention, appreciation and “draw” is close to universal among men. This universal appreciation is not commonly shared across a beautiful sunset, a great meal, a classic painting, an opera masterpiece or Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory. Notice that this discussion has been limited to a man’s response and not to a woman’s. And here’s why.
Nature, or God, or evolution has a primary mandate for us here on earth. It is procreation, the continuation of the species. But how to facilitate this mandate? The mechanism is simple. Define the male and female of the species, give them specific features, and have them come together to create the next generation. But how does nature promote this “coming together”? If this joining were left to accident, there would be no life on this planet. So, nature created a universal attraction between the male and female, an attraction that draws the male to the female and sponsors a reproductive event. What is the first signal that draws a man to the woman? It is visual appearance. So, by design, the most beautiful thing on earth is a beautiful woman.
